Dental Implants
Another set of procedures performed by cosmetic
dentists is dental implants. Dental implants are used to replace
missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial teeth implanted into
the jaw and have the look and feel of your natural teeth.
Types of Dental Implants
This is a list of the most common types of dental implants:
· Root-form implants are the most common
type of dental implant. Also known as an endosseous or endosteal
dental implants because the implant is placed in the
bone, root-form implants are made of titanium and look like screws,
nails, or cones.
· Sub-periosteal implants are the type
of dental implant used when a patient does not have enough bone
in the jaw to support a root-form implant. Sub-periosteal
dental implants are placed over the jaw, not into it.
· Plate-form implants are rectangular
metal dental implants with one or two metal prongs on one side.
Plate-form dental implants are placed vertically in
the jaw with the prongs sticking up into the mouth, providing a
place to mount the artificial tooth.
· Ramus-frame implants are dental implants
commonly used when the lower jawbone is thin. Ramus-frame dental
implants are placed in the jaw at the back of the mouth
near the chin. Then once the ramujs-frame dental implant heals,
dentures are made to fit the thin metal bar that is
visible above the gum tissue.
· Transosseous implants are dental
implants used in the lower jaw only and rarely used. Transosseous
dental implants are bolted onto the jawbone and extend
along the entire lower jaw.
Dental Implant Procedure
The dental implant surgical procedure is
performed while the patient is under local anesthetic. The dental
implant surgeon makes an incision in the gums, thus exposing the
jawbone, and makes a hole in which the dental implant will be fit.
The dental implant is then placed into the bone and the gums are
closed with stitches. It sounds more invasive than it really is.
A typical dental implant procedure is considered routine by today’s
standards.
Once the dental implant surgical procedure is successfully completed,
the bone must be given substantial time to grow. During this time,
the bone will grow and fuse around the dental implant, a process
known as osseointegration. If the dental implant is done in the
upper jaw, it will take approximately six months for this to take
place. If the dental implant is done in the lower jaw, it will take
approximately three months.
When osseointegration is completed, the artificial tooth, bridges,
and/or dentures are fitted. This final part of the dental implant
process will vary according to the type of dental implant being
used.
Cost of Dental Implants
The cost of dental implants obviously will
depend on the type of dental implant procedure use, the number of
implants involved, and the area of the country in which the procedure
is performed. Dental implants, on average, will range from $2,000
to $4,000 while multiple implants can cost much, much more.
