Dental Bridges
Bridges are one way cosmetic dentists can
fill a gap created by a missing tooth (or teeth). A dental bridge
consists of two dental crowns, one on either side of the gap, and
a false tooth in the middle, where the gap is. The dental bridge
can be supported by your natural teeth, dental implants, or a combination
of your natural teeth and dental implants.
Different Types of Dental Bridges
Three types of bridges:
· Traditional dental bridges consist
of two dental crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap, and
a false tooth in between. Traditional bridges are the most common
type of dental bridges used. Traditional dental bridges are made
of ceramic or porcelain material fused to metal (PFM).
· Cantilever dental bridges are used
when there are teeth on only one side of the gap in the mouth.
· Maryland bonded dental bridges consist
of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework.
Bridgework Procedure
The cosmetic dentist begins the bridgework
by filing down the teeth involved to accommodate the dental crowns.
The cosmetic dentist will then take impressions of the teeth, and
these impressions will be used to make the dental crowns.
Once the crowns are finished, the false tooth (or teeth) will be
bonded to them. When the bridge is ready, a return visit to the
dentist will be necessary to place it on the teeth. The bridge will
last five to seven years and, in some cases, longer.
Cost of Bridges
The final cost of getting a bridge will always
depend on the type of bridge being used and the area of the country
in which the procedure is being performed.
