What is Cosmetic Dentistry
You could say that cosmetic dentistry is
an area of dentistry with the sole purpose of creating a more aesthetically
pleasing smile. Cosmetic Dentists whiten teeth,
replace missing teeth, and repair chipped teeth through a variety
of cosmetic dentistry options, including tooth bleaching, porcelain
veneers, dental implants, bonding, dental crowns, and bridges.
Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
Your cosmetic dentist has a variety of techniques
at his/her disposal. The following is a list of common Cosmetic
Dentistry Procedures that are commonly performed by your
typical cosmetic dentists:
- Tooth
bleaching - there are two methods for whitening teeth: laser
whitening (performed in the cosmetic dentist's office) and at-home
bleaching (involving the use of do-it-yourself bleaching kits).
- Porcelain
veneers - a ceramic shell applied to the front of the teeth
creating a whiter appearance.
- Dental
implants - artificial teeth used to replace missing or badly
damaged teeth.
- Bonding
- the use of tooth colored material applied to the teeth. It can
then be polished and shaped to look like the rest of the teeth.
- Dental
crowns - a cap used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. The
cap is shaped to look like the rest of the tooth.
- Bridges
- two crowns and a dental implant used to fill in a gap where
a tooth is missing. The crowns are placed on the two teeth on
either side of the gap, and are connected to the dental implant
that fills the empty space.
- Orthodontics
- cosmetic dentistry which straightens crooked teeth and repairs
an irregular bite. Corrective appliances, including braces
and retainers are used by the cosmetic dentist, or in this
case referred to as an Orthodontist. These procedures can in some
cases take years to perform.
Choosing a Cosmetic Dentist
Above all, when choosing a cosmetic dentist,
go with reputable referrals and experience. If there are complications
during a cosmetic dentistry procedure, the more experienced cosmetic
dentist is more able to handle the challenge. The more experienced
cosmetic dentist will also have had more time to perfect their technique
which means you know better what to expect in the end.
Guidelines to follow when choosing
a cosmetic dentist to call your own:
- Your cosmetic dentist should be accredited
by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, which simply assures
the dentist has had specific training in cosmetic dentistry.
- Consider choosing a cosmetic dentist
whose practice specializes in cosmetic dentistry.
- You may also want to look at some before
and after photos of his/her patients that have undergone cosmetic
dentistry procedures.
